Croatian MEP Mislav Kolakušić: “Now these same idiots or psychopaths, I’m not sure what they really are, want to make all of our medical data, medical history, and accompanying findings, lab findings, and discharge letters available to the industry… Each of our visits to the doctor will be available to a large number of people, which will make our health condition subject to a large number of abuses, because this data will be traded like all other data…”
What MEP Mislav Kolakušić: is referring to here is the data sharing of medical data, your entire medical history. Under the scheme, GP health data for everyone in England, with identities partially removed, would be made available to researchers and companies for healthcare research and planning. The scheme is more extensive than current GP data-sharing arrangements.
The deadline for health and care organisations to comply with national data opt-out policy is now 31 July 2022. The reason the scheme has been extended is due to the overwhelming backlash from members of the British public deciding to opt-out of the scheme. Due to an online campaign encouraging people to opt out grew over the summer of 2021. Government figures show that in May 107,429 people opted out. In June, a further 1,275,153 followed.
“We became aware of this latest GP [data] grab in late March,” said Phil Booth, coordinator of medConfidential, one of the groups most critical of the scheme. “We said ‘well that’s just going to blow up’, and it did.
You do still have choices about what’s done with your data, but the Government has still not committed to directly telling everyone what it plans to do with NHS patients’ data – nor how everyone can exercise their own choices.
Fortunatly, thanks to groups like medConfidential, people are being informed on how to protect their medical data:.
